Curtain Rods Measuring
Measure all windows you will be dressing. Even if they look alike, they rarely are identical. Convert your measurements into inches. Note the location of other windows, doors, wall space, even large pieces of furniture that may cut into stackback or window treatment space.
Outside Versus Inside Dimensions
You'll need to measure the inside dimensions for hardware or undertreatments which mount inside the window, for example, spring pressure rods, cafe rods, blinds and shades. Don't forget the recess for an inside treatment. It is only as deep as the distance to the first thing which projects into the space, such as a window crank or handle. Measure outside dimensions for window treatments which will mount outside of the window. If you intend to draw the draperies back to fully expose the window, measure beyond the window to allow for the stackback of the draperies.
Measuring and Positioning the Hardware
  1. Determine where you want the outsides (and insides, if applicable) of the draperies or swags to be. Measure the outside dimensions (between the outside points) and use rods of that approximate length. Most metal rods can be extended, and all wood poles can be cut to length.
  2. Position the decorative or functional brackets appropriately, being conscious of their position in relation to the pole or rod (where the pole or rod fits into them). Mount the brackets according to the instructions provided with the packaging.
  3. Place the rod or pole onto or into the brackets after inserting through rings, tab tops or rod pockets. Drape the swag over the rod. If you are using a traverse rod, follow the instructions included.
How to Measure for Draperies
Begin at the top; position your curtain rod. To measure for curtain length, decide where you want your curtain to start-at the window height, above or below and where it will fall-valance length, window sill, window apron, floor, longer than floor ... and then measure from the top of the rod down. Scarves should be longer than the width of the window plus twice the lenght you want the scarf to swag. Add length if you are going to wrap the scarf around the rod or pole. If you are using clip rings, measure from the bottomn of the hooks. For drapery panel width, measure the length of the curtain rod and multiply it by 1 -1/2 to 2 times.
